Year of grant: 2025 Research Area: MARiNAO Project type: Post.doc.-verkætlan Project title: Genomic Architecture of Sex: exploring the role of environmental clines in the sex determination of Greenland halibut Grant number: 8020 Project manager: Daniel Estévez Barcia Institution/company: Greenland Institute of Natural Resources Other participants: DTU Aqua, Fróðskaparsetur Føroya og Hafrannsóknastovnun Project period: 20.09.2025-20.09.2027 Total budget: Kr. 6.953.458 Grant from the FRC in DKK: Kr. 3.553.450 Project description: Sex is ubiquitous throughout the entire tree of life, yet understanding its genetic basis and evolution is a standing challenge in biological research. Furthermore, it is a key characteristic in fisheries management and aquaculture. In this project, we will study genomic architecture in Greenland halibut, a valuable species, across the North Atlantic, attending to its variation in relation to sex and environmental clines. Obtained results can be used to provide tools for fishery management, including individual sex and stock of origin assignment. This will be the first time the whole genomic architecture of Greenland halibut is studied across an extensive distribution, and one of the few where geographic variation in sex determination is investigated within a species.
